Summer Band Camp Preparation Guide

Welcome to the Dutch Fork Silver Spirit Marching Band! We’re excited to welcome new and returning members to another exciting season. This guide will help students and families prepare for summer band camp with confidence.

✅ What Students Should Be Doing Now to Prepare

Band camp is physically and mentally demanding, especially in the South Carolina summer heat. Preparation starts before the first rehearsal.

🏃‍♂️ Physical Preparation (Start Now!)

Marching band is a sport! Students should begin conditioning now to prepare for long days of movement and rehearsal.

  • Walk or jog daily (20–30 minutes) to build endurance.

  • Stretch regularly, especially legs, shoulders, and back.

  • Practice marching basics (mark time, forward/backward march, posture).

  • Hydration habit: Begin drinking more water now. Aim for 64 oz/day or more leading into camp.

👕 What to Wear to Camp

Wearing the right clothing keeps students safe, comfortable, and able to perform their best.

Required Daily Attire:

  • Light-colored T-shirt (moisture-wicking or athletic material preferred) - Students with a dark colored shirt may be sent home!!

  • Athletic shorts (not jeans or khakis)

  • Athletic shoes with good support (no sandals, Converse, Crocs, or boots)

  • Socks (bring an extra pair in your bag)

  • Hat or visor (protects from sun).. especially if you have dark hair!!

  • Sunglasses (optional but recommended)

  • Light jacket or hoodie for when we come into the AC for rehearsals

  • An extra outfit (t-shirt, shorts, socks) to change into in the event we get caught in rain (you can leave in your locker)

🎒 What to Bring to Camp Daily

Make sure your student comes fully prepared each day.

  • Large, refillable water jug (at least ½ gallon – labeled with student’s name)

  • Healthy lunch/snacks (you need to bring your own lunch each day of band camp)

  • Sunscreen (if you use it) apply before arriving and reapply during breaks as needed

  • Pencil & Music Folder for musicians (3 ring binder for front ensemble, flip folders and lyres for musicians)

  • Instrument and all accessories (reeds, valve oil, sticks, harness, etc.)

  • Towel (for sitting or wiping off sweat)

  • Deodorant

📅 What to Expect at Band Camp

Band camp is where we learn marching fundamentals, music, and drill. It’s also where students build strong friendships and learn the values of teamwork, leadership, and dedication.

  • Camp is mandatory for all performers

  • Days include both indoor and outdoor rehearsal blocks

  • Students will be active throughout the day – physical and mental focus is important

  • Breaks are provided, but students must manage hydration and rest wisely

  • Camp is often the highlight of the season – hard work pays off quickly!

🧠 Mental & Musical Preparation

Before Camp:

  • Begin practicing music and warm-ups (provided via email or Google Drive)

  • Begin to Memorize Alma Mater, Start Spangled Banner, Stand tunes, and Fight song

  • Familiarize yourself with basic music theory and marching terminology

  • Set personal goals: ex. “I want to memorize 2 songs before camp,” or “I want to improve my posture.”

💬 Parent Reminders

  • Ensure your child eats a nutritious breakfast each morning before camp

  • Encourage positive attitude and commitment

  • Label everything your child brings (if you want to see it again)

  • Check daily communications via email and BAND app for updates

  • PLEASE DO NOT BRING STUDENTS FAST FOOD FOR LUNCH.  THEY NEED TO PACK LUNCH EACH DAY.  STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE FOOD DELIVERED OR LEAVE CAMPUS FOR LUNCH. STUDENTS WILL BE SENT HOME IF THEY DO NOT NOT ARRIVE WITH LUNCH AND HAVE ALREADY EATEN BREAKFAST.

🏁 Final Notes

We are so excited to get started! Band camp is a life-changing experience filled with growth, music, and community. With proper preparation, every student can have a successful start to the season.
